10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

You know all the things that people always say about having kids. About how you will never sleep again and your days of privacy in the bathroom are over. Everyone's heard all the usual stuff over and over again. Here are some things that people don't always tell you:

1. You can never completely relax again because you have developed "super senses", hearing every little noise your little one makes while sleeping or playing in the other room. I don't really think this applies to men because in my experience they will just sleep through anything and don't pay much attention to what is happening right next to them...

2. You will find that love this little person and worry about them so much more than you ever thought possible.

3. That it's hard. Really hard. Especially the first few weeks. Somehow you will forget the hard part and only remember the good parts...I don't know how this happens. Then if you decide to have another one, you are like "oh yeah...how could I forget this zombie-like feeling that comes with getting up every single hour of the night with a sweet baby!?"

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

4. That there is no one "right way" to parent. Every kid is different. There are hundreds of parenting books out there and everyone always has advice for you but the truth is you'll just have to make it up as you go.

5. That having kids is completely messy and there's nothing you can do about it. It will also change what you consider to be "gross". Baby barf, poop, snot coming out of their little noses that you have to pick out for them, it's all really not that awful anymore. Now, other people's kids...no thanks, that's still disgusting.

6. That most of the time raising kids is really boring. You have the occasional moments of excitement but otherwise you're mostly doing the same thing over and over and over again. Read the same books every night. Sing the same song hundreds of times. It's especially monotonous with babies who really don't do anything except eat and sleep for awhile.

7. There really is not enough time in the day to do everything you need to do. This diagram is very true:

8. That your brain won't work as well as it used to. I don't know what it is about having babies that does this, but it certainly has happened for me. Maybe it gets back to normal as they get older? I sure hope so!

9. That any shows involving children or babies will emotionally affect you much more than they did before. Actually, change that to everything. Everything affects me emotionally lately.

10. That even with all the worry, extra expenses and frustration there is no way you would change it for the world.

  1. Completely agree with number 5! I'll change my own kid's diaper all day long, but don't ask me to change somebody else's. haha! Any your right, even through the challenges we wouldn't trade any of it!

  3. I deal with #8 on a regular basis. WHY IS THAT? I would think after having kids because you always have to be on your toes, your brain would be ahead of the game. NOPE. This is a great list! #bloggersdigest

  4. These are great! I completely agree with number one. I can sleep through a thunderstorm but as soon as my little makes a sound, I am awake!

  5. I was lifting my daughter up above my head doing the "you're an airplane, look at how high you can go" thing when she spit up. As I was mid-sentence, it went in my mouth.

Yeah. My definition of gross is different now.

    1. Oh no! That's awful, yet funny at the same time! I've had it come close before, but not that close! lol

  6. All of those are so true. I can't even watch the news anymore because there is always something on there that leaves me rolled into an emotional sobbing ball on the couch wondering what would I do and imagining those horrible things happening to me and my children. No news in my house EVER. Great post! (Leilani)

  8. These are so right on Stephanie! I feel like I'm always oh high alert, especially when we go out to eat. I'm always trying to keep my daughter happy so we can enjoy a meal. But she always gets bored about 5 minutes before our food comes. No fail.
And yes, it can be really boring! I'm so glad you aren't afraid to say that. Sometimes I just want to go do something on my own, not play Frozen for the 100th time again. Ana can only be "ice cold" so many times little girl!

    1. I always feel like it's more stress than it's worth trying to go out to eat or similar situations right now! You are right, they are usually fine until just when we get our food! lol. Also I'm glad I'm not the only one who says it can be boring sometimes, I feel bad, but it's true haha :)

  10. Love you list! #4 Is soooo right. You really have to take the advise you are given, but listen to your gut when deciding what's right for you and your baby.

  11. All excellent and true points Stephanie! Oh the monotony and boredom. No one ever tells you THAT part!

  12. #7 is SO truthful and the hardest issue for me to deal with (besides that zombie-like state. That doesn't count bc that's a given). And #9 is so true, too! I have to actively disconnect myself emotionally from a show if it contains an abuse plotline regarding children so I don't put my children in the child-actor's place.

  14. I love this list! I don't see how you can saying parenting is boring though with three kids. My life is anything but boring with my three kids. They keep me well entertained and on my toes and climbing walls of frustration all throughout the day. ;) Have you added animal kids into the mix yet?? Then it gets REALLY interesting.
Everything else I totally agree with you on though.

    1. Thanks Crystal! It's not the kind of boring where there's nothing to do, it's more the monotonous type of boring where you do the same thing over and over again :) I'm sure it will be a little different when they get older! I hope you are having a great week!

  16. Oh, that is list right on. I wish someone would have told me that before I got pregnant. Then again, I think I still would have needed to make it up as I went along.

Add one other thing to that list: You will worry about them for the rest of your life, and right into your grave.

  18. Wow. Thanks for saying it's boring. I feel guilty even thinking that sometimes, like I should be as excited about every day as I am about the days we do big, exciting things like go to the zoo or water park. If other moms feel this way than its ok for me to feel this way. And here come those emotions thinking about it (hahaha :)) Emily
