My Summer Reading List

Summer Reading List

I've been a little better about reading these last couple of weeks, although it's really hard to find the time! These are the books I would really like to read this summer. I know, summer is half way over already but at least I've started on one of them!

1. Under the Dome by Stephen King

I started reading this one last summer. I can't seem to get into it. I think it's because it's completely different than the show, and I love the show. This is why you should always read the book first! I still want to finish it though because I really want to know what's going on.

"On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out."

2. Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Thomas Sweterlitsch

"A decade has passed since the city of Pittsburgh was reduced to ash.

While the rest of the world has moved on, losing itself in the noise of a media-glutted future, survivor John Dominic Blaxton remains obsessed with the past. Grieving for his wife and unborn child who perished in the blast, Dominic relives his lost life by immersing in the Archive—a fully interactive digital reconstruction of Pittsburgh, accessible to anyone who wants to visit the places they remember and the people they loved.

Dominic investigates deaths recorded in the Archive to help close cases long since grown cold, but when he discovers glitches in the code surrounding a crime scene—the body of a beautiful woman abandoned in a muddy park that he’s convinced someone tried to delete from the Archive—his cycle of grief is shattered.

With nothing left to lose, Dominic tracks the murder through a web of deceit that takes him from the darkest corners of the Archive to the ruins of the city itself, leading him into the heart of a nightmare more horrific than anything he could have imagined"

3.Divergent by Veronica Roth

"In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her."

4. The City by Dean Koontz

"Here is the riveting, soul-stirring story of Jonah Kirk, son of an exceptional singer, grandson of a formidable “piano man,” a musical prodigy beginning to explore his own gifts when he crosses a group of extremely dangerous people, with shattering consequences. Set in a more innocent time not so long ago, The City encompasses a lifetime but unfolds over three extraordinary, heart-racing years of tribulation and triumph, in which Jonah first grasps the electrifying power of music and art, of enduring friendship, of everyday heroes."

5. The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street by Susan Jane Gilman

"In 1913, little Malka Treynovsky flees Russia with her family. Bedazzled by tales of gold and movie stardom, she tricks them into buying tickets for America. Yet no sooner do they land on the squalid Lower East Side of Manhattan, than Malka is crippled and abandoned in the street.

Taken in by a tough-loving Italian ices peddler, she manages to survive through cunning and inventiveness. As she learns the secrets of his trade, she begins to shape her own destiny. She falls in love with a gorgeous, illiterate radical named Albert, and they set off across America in an ice cream truck. Slowly, she transforms herself into Lillian Dunkle, "The Ice Cream Queen" -- doyenne of an empire of ice cream franchises and a celebrated television personality.

Lillian's rise to fame and fortune spans seventy years and is inextricably linked to the course of American history itself, from Prohibition to the disco days of Studio 54. Yet Lillian Dunkle is nothing like the whimsical motherly persona she crafts for herself in the media. Conniving, profane, and irreverent, she is a supremely complex woman who prefers a good stiff drink to an ice cream cone. And when her past begins to catch up with her, everything she has spent her life building is at stake."

6. All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner

"Allison Weiss got her happy endinga handsome husband, adorable daughter, a job she loves, and the big house in the suburbs. But while waiting in the pediatrician’s office, she opens a magazine to a quiz about addiction and starts to wonder…Is a Percocet at the end of the day really different from a glass of wine? Is it such a bad thing to pop a Vicodin after a brutal Jump & Pump class…or if your husband ignores you?

The pills help her manage the realities of her good-looking life: that her husband is distant, that her daughter is acting out, that her father’s Alzheimer’s is worsening and her mother is barely managing to cope. She tells herself that they let her make it through her days…but what if her increasing drug use, a habit that’s becoming expensive and hard to hide, is turning into her biggest problem of all?"

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

You know all the things that people always say about having kids. About how you will never sleep again and your days of privacy in the bathroom are over. Everyone's heard all the usual stuff over and over again. Here are some things that people don't always tell you:

1. You can never completely relax again because you have developed "super senses", hearing every little noise your little one makes while sleeping or playing in the other room. I don't really think this applies to men because in my experience they will just sleep through anything and don't pay much attention to what is happening right next to them...

2. You will find that love this little person and worry about them so much more than you ever thought possible.

3. That it's hard. Really hard. Especially the first few weeks. Somehow you will forget the hard part and only remember the good parts...I don't know how this happens. Then if you decide to have another one, you are like "oh yeah...how could I forget this zombie-like feeling that comes with getting up every single hour of the night with a sweet baby!?"

10 Things Nobody Tells You About Having Kids

4. That there is no one "right way" to parent. Every kid is different. There are hundreds of parenting books out there and everyone always has advice for you but the truth is you'll just have to make it up as you go.

5. That having kids is completely messy and there's nothing you can do about it. It will also change what you consider to be "gross". Baby barf, poop, snot coming out of their little noses that you have to pick out for them, it's all really not that awful anymore. Now, other people's kids...no thanks, that's still disgusting.

6. That most of the time raising kids is really boring. You have the occasional moments of excitement but otherwise you're mostly doing the same thing over and over and over again. Read the same books every night. Sing the same song hundreds of times. It's especially monotonous with babies who really don't do anything except eat and sleep for awhile.

7. There really is not enough time in the day to do everything you need to do. This diagram is very true:

8. That your brain won't work as well as it used to. I don't know what it is about having babies that does this, but it certainly has happened for me. Maybe it gets back to normal as they get older? I sure hope so!

9. That any shows involving children or babies will emotionally affect you much more than they did before. Actually, change that to everything. Everything affects me emotionally lately.

10. That even with all the worry, extra expenses and frustration there is no way you would change it for the world.

5 Summer TV Shows You Should Watch

Is anyone else sad when shows come to an end and you have to wait half a year before they come back on again? At least we have some great summer shows to watch while we are waiting! If you're wondering which shows I'm eagerly waiting for this fall it's Walking Dead and Once Upon a Time. And here are the awesome shows we are going to be watching this summer to keep us occupied:

(source)
1. Royal Pains - a medical drama about rich people that can afford to have a personal concierge doctor at their beck and call. Well, it's about the doctors, but they are rich too. Everyone has tons of money and medical issues.

(source)
2. Under the Dome - a small town is suddenly and strangely cut off from the rest of the world inside a giant invisible dome. Chaos and violence erupt inside as people start to realize that eventually they will run out of resources. Many mysterious things happen and nobody knows what's going on.

(source)
3. Covert Affairs - a young CIA operative saves the day during many dangerous missions where she goes undercover. Lots of people fall in love. People disappear and die or pretend they are dead.

(source)
4. Suits - a drama about lawyers wearing suits and covering up lies and falling in love with each other.

(source)
5. The Last Ship (This is a new one we want to check out, hopefully it's good!) - a global pandemic wipes out 80% of the planet's population and the crew of a lone naval destroyer must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction. Is anyone else going to try this show out?

What are some of your favorite summer shows to watch?

"You Must Have Been Huge!"

"You must have been huge!" and other twin comments...

It's so weird how having twins makes people who would normally not even speak to you with just one baby think that they can make all sorts of comments. Usually when we go out with the boys my husband is pushing the double stroller and I'm pushing the shopping cart with our oldest. So I get to see everyone staring and pointing and turning to look at the babies in the stroller. It's kinda funny. Almost like being a local celebrity or something. I don't mind most of the comments but it does get tiring hearing the same thing over and over and over.

Here are some of the things I'm already tired of hearing from everyone (and our twins are only 10 months old!) Does it continue when they are older? Some of you with twins or more would know.

"Are they twins?" this is what everyone asks first. I guess I can't blame them, I'd probably ask that too, but you'd think it would be pretty obvious. Some possible replies to this: "they are triplets but we leave the ugly one at home." "one is his and one is mine." "we liked this one so much we cloned him"

"You have your hands full!" The second thing that every.single.person says to us. Thank you for pointing out the obvious. I am very aware that our hands are full! They are especially shocked when they realize we have a third little one as well.

"How do you tell them apart?" To me they look different, so it's hard to answer this. If I was funny at all I would say "we can't, we just guess and hopefully get it right" or "we tattooed bar-codes on them, in case we mix them up we can just scan them with our phones." People would probably believe it. Maybe I should actually try it. The thing is I can never say stuff like that without cracking up.

"Double trouble" Oh man, I just really do not like when people say that for some reason! They only say it about boys, right? Why must boys be so much more trouble than girls? My boys are perfect and no trouble at all. Ever. (If only this were true)

"I have kids that are (anywhere from one year to 18 months) apart, so I know how it is." "Yep, cause that's exactly the same thing..." In my case I have both twins and kids that are only one year apart. So I know for a fact it is not at all the same thing. Some people even say that it is harder than having twins. Maybe that's true for them, but I just can't see how it is.

"You must have been huge!" Yes I did really have a lady say this to me the other day. I'm not annoyed by this, I was amused in fact. And I agreed with her, because yes, I was huge. Just funny that someone would say that out loud. She was so sweet though, she followed it up with "because you're so tiny!" Aww, what a nice thing to say, it made my day.

"I don't know how you do it." Me either. I just do. I don't really have any other choice!

I haven't had any mean comments or really strange comments yet. They always ask if they are both boys, but at that age it can be hard to tell so I don't blame them. Plus they are always in their carseats so it's hard to get a good look at them right now. The other thing I find funny is when people are standing behind us in line talking about us and how much work it must be. Don't they know I can hear everything they are saying? This is the sort of fun times we have every time we go to the store!

If you have twins or more I'm sure you can relate. What's the craziest comment or question you've had before?

May Goals

Is it really May already?!? It's hard to believe how fast this year is going by. I was going to write this yesterday but I ended up getting busy (and lazy). I have so much to do this month so I needed to write down my goals that I have. I'm pretty sure I didn't get all of them completed for the month of April, but this month perhaps I can do better.

Fitness Goals:
- Continue working out 4 or 5 times a week
-Start running outside
-Watch portions better

Home Goals:
-Get ready for our garage sale at the end of the month
-Continue Spring cleaning
-Finish Superman's dresser so he can use it
-Read one book
-Plant the garden boxes

I better not make too many goals or I will run out of time to finish everything again! Why do the days go by so fast?

Ok, I Admit It...

Ok, I Admit It...Things I Do That You Might Find Annoying! You know those "pet peeves" everyone has? Well I've been reading a lot of lists of the lately and realized that sadly I am guilty of quite a few of them. I've read all of these on one list or another so I know that I'm irking at least a few people! Here are the things I do that just might annoy you:

1. Leaving drawers open an inch. I've gotten a lot better at this obviously since I can't leave them open where my little ones can reach them, but the silverware drawer is usually like that. The funny thing is if Superman sees it he will close it for me, he does not like things out of place. So now I guess I don't have that problem after all!

2. I will tell you my 1-year-old's age in months. I don't really care if you have to try to figure it out, it's not that difficult. Sure, after he's turns two I won't do that anymore but there's such a huge difference between 13 months and 22 months it just seems logical to me.

3. I am constantly leaving the top cupboard doors open. Sadly my little boy cannot reach those yet (good thing) so they hang open until I come back and realize it and finally close them.

4. I'm really bad about putting the new toilet paper roll on the holder. I don't know why, I guess it's just laziness. I usually leave it on the counter and intend to put it on later but then my husband is the one that ends up doing it, oops.

5. I don't like to drive by myself, it just seems so lonely. So whenever I do go somewhere on my own (this happens so rarely nowadays) I usually try to call someone, my mom most of the time. So yes, I'm one of those cell phone drivers. I promise I'm a good driver though. It's also not illegal here, if it was I wouldn't do it.

6. My laundry is always laying in a pile on the floor. Usually because my clean clothes are still in the laundry basket. From this list it appears that I'm a big slob. I'm really not! My house is clean most of the time (just not our bedroom). You know how women are usually complaining that their husband is so messy? Well my husband is not, I probably drive him crazy! He never says anything about it though...what a nice guy.

So even if you might find some of my quirks annoying, it's ok, I probably find some of yours slightly frustrating as well. I'll save my list of minor annoyances for another day. (Actually I'll just tell you one of them: I hate the term "pet peeve").

Being a SAHM: What I Love and What I Don't

Being a SAHM: What I Love and What I Don't

As you probably already know if you have been following me, I stay home with my three little boys all day, every day. We are very blessed and have been able to afford it with very little sacrifice. For us it is the only sensible option since if I was to go back to a full-time job and we had to find day care for 3 little ones, the cost of daycare would make it pointless. I love being able to stay home with my babies but there are some days when I also miss going to work and think about how nice it might be to be able to have a break from taking care of small humans for awhile. So I decided to make a list of the "pros and cons" of being a SAHM (for me). We'll go with the "Cons" first:

1. The number one thing I find to be driving me crazy lately is having no adult interaction and feeling isolated.

2. During the winter months we barely ever left the house, except for our weekly grocery shopping trip.

3. You get to be a human kleenex when the babies are sick (like this past week). I hate when kids have snotty noses, but I've realized lately just how hard it is to keep up with cleaning those little noses constantly.

4. Constant diaper changes and dealing with a lot of poop. The babies have gotten particularly difficult to change lately with their wiggly antics and limbs that seem to made out of rubber.

5. No breaks or vacations or "weekends". Well, I guess nap time is a break. That's why I love it so much. Bedtime is also a favorite time of the day.

6. Sometimes people think that as a SAHM you don't "work" and perhaps you just sit around watching TV all day. Nothing could be further from the truth.

7. It's really stressful when all three are whining and fussing and crying at the same time. This doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's hard.

8. I'm usually doing about 5 or 6 different things at once and half the time I forget what I started out doing in the first place.

Being a SAHM: What I Love and What I Don't

Ok, enough of the negativity, now let's look at the awesome things about staying home with my children!

1. I get to see everything that they learn. I don't have to miss out on any "firsts".

2. I am able to take tons and tons of pictures of them. Which reminds me I really need to back up my phone, if it were to lose all my pictures, I'd probably cry for days.

3. I don't have to get dressed up or put on makeup or do my hair unless we are going somewhere, which isn't very often.

4. I can workout during nap time.

5. I get to raise my children the way I want to. Sure I might have some crazy high standards that I am finding out are sometimes improbable or even impossible, but at least I can learn as I go.

6. Sometimes I can take naps when they are napping. This is a highlight of the day. Lately I don't have time for this, but it was awesome when I did.

7. I don't have to worry as much as I would if I wasn't with them all day.

8. I can snuggle and kiss and tickle my babies to hear them laugh whenever I want to!

So despite all the stress and the long days and the stinky diapers I will never regret being a SAHM. I am so grateful to be able to spend every moment with my adorable and silly little boys!

Meet Our New Puppy!

Hooray! The day I have been looking forward to for three weeks finally arrived. Yesterday evening we went to bring home our little girl. She grew so much since we last saw her! I think she was the biggest of the litter. She was the biggest of the girls for sure and I only saw one of her brothers but she was bigger than him. After some debate we decided to name her Dakota. She is still nervous so she hasn't left her kennel much yet. She whined a lot during the night but we were expecting that. She woke up one of the babies a couple of times but at least he went right back to sleep.

I'm so excited! It's going to be a lot of work, but we knew what we were getting into. I think a lot of people think we are crazy for getting a puppy right now, but it will work out just fine. Every time I open the back door to bring her outside, everyone rushes over to get out. The babies crawling, our cat Mina loves to try to escape and Superman of course but he likes to help. I'll have to try to distract the babies with something! Next month we will be taking her to puppy obedience classes so that will be good.

Other than the puppy it's been a rough couple of days lately. I had a bad cold last week and I still have it somewhat, but now all the boys have gotten it and are coughing and snotty and feverish, poor babies. I hope they get over it fast because as you know babies absolutely hate having their noses wiped yet they need it every 5 minutes! The best part is every time I pick them up they wipe their faces on my shoulder, but I guess they are just trying to help out.

Look at this sweet little girl!

My Blog was Nominated!

My Blog was Nominated!

I'm excited to say that my blog was nominated for a Liebster Award! The lovely Angela over at Cuddles & Cartoons nominated me back in March and since I'm still figuring out Google+ I didn't see the notification about it until this week. I really need to start using that more often...

You might be wondering what exactly is a Liebster Award anyways? It is an award that is given to up and coming bloggers with less than 200 followers. "Liebster" is German and means: sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome. It's a great way to connect with other bloggers and spread the word about newer or smaller blogs.

Here are the rules for receiving the award:
1. Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you and display the award.
2. Give 11 random facts about yourself.
3. Answer the 11 questions from the person who tagged you and create 11 new questions for the people that you tag to answer.
4. Nominate 11 blogs with fewer than 200 followers for the award and let them know.

I just had a post with 10 random facts about me last week, but I think I can still come up with 11 new ones:
1. I took fencing lessons in college. Also ballroom dancing.
2. One time I dislocated my shoulder throwing a frisbee.
3. My favorite color is green.
4. I love juggling and throwing knives.
5. I don't like milk chocolate and I'm not a big fan of ice cream.
6. I'm not a very "girly" girl.
7. I only drink soda once a week.
8. I am scared of fish.
9. I love traveling and have been to Brazil, Haiti, Romania, Hungary, Canada (of course, it's only 3 hours away) Mexico, and many different states.
10. I have glasses but never wear them.
11. I was home-schooled from kindergarten until graduation.

My 11 Questions to answer:

1.  What is your favorite topic to blog about?
Anything having to do with babies or pregnancy or baking.

2. If you had to change the name of your blog what would it be?
Well since I just started this blog because I wanted a different name, I like what I have now!

3. If you could blog about anything without being negatively labeled, what would it be?
I do blog about whatever I want to already.

4. Would you rather go camping or stay in a hotel?
Camping! So much more to do. Unless it's raining or cold, than I'll pick the hotel. I'm a wimp.

5. Biggest pet peeve?
People who stand in the aisles of the grocery store blocking everyone else and not noticing.

6. Most important item on your grocery list?
Cereal and milk. I love cold cereal, I could eat it for every meal if I had to.

7. Beaches or mountains?
Mountains. I don't really like the beach. I am scared of fish as I mentioned above. I get bored just sitting there. I'd rather go hiking in the mountains any day.

8. If you could change one thing in your life right now what would it be?
I wouldn't change anything right now. I love my life. (So cheesy). Okay, I'd take more money, but who wouldn't?

9. What do you look for in a significant other?
I already have one, so I don't look. They better be funny and get my jokes though.

10. Name one thing that makes you laugh uncontrollably?
That usually only happens when I'm really tired. I get goofy. Otherwise my babies being silly always makes me laugh, I can't help it, they are so cute!

Blogs I am nominating:

11 Questions for the blogs I nominated:

1. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
2. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
3. What is your favorite candy?
4. What is your biggest fear?
5. What is the worst injury that every happened to you?
6. What was the last book you read?
7. What is your favorite season?

April Goals!

April Goals

Well I guess Spring is officially here since I just saw a (really fat) robin on our deck. At the same time we also got a bit of snow last night and it's still snowing slightly...so I don't even know what to think! I just really can't wait for it to get warm enough for us to play outside. The kids have some great outdoor toys that we want to put together and it will be so nice not to be cooped up inside all the time!

I was going to have a post about my spring cleaning goals and stuff I wanted to get done this April. Which I probably will still list some of it, but when I started looking at some of these spring cleaning checklists I got a little overwhelmed. There's just sooo much to do! I don't even want to think of it right now! I'm sure part of it is the awful cold that I have that is making me too tired to do anything. Or maybe I'm just lazy. That's probably 90% of the problem right there!

So here's a short list of April Goals...even though it's a few days late:
-Spring Cleaning (ugh!)
-Go through everyone's clothing for the summer
-Plan my garden boxes out
-Read at least one book (I have a few that I need to finish up...)
-Get Superman's room and bed ready for him to move from crib to regular bed

Blog Goals:
-Write at least 5 posts/week
-Get to 100 likes on Facebook
-Get to 1000 followers on Pinterest and Twitter

Hopefully I can get all of them done this month! I think the hardest one will actually be reading a book. I can't think of any time I have to do that anymore!

10 Random Things About Me

10 Random Things About Me

Today I have something a little bit different. Ten random things about me, just for fun.

1. I was born in Minnesota and still consider myself a Minnesotan even though I now live in North Dakota. Go Twins!

2. I used to have this recurring dream about a very wise old white chinchilla that would give me advice. This is the reason I have always wanted to get a chinchilla.

3. I loved working retail and customer service jobs and wouldn't mind doing that again at some time.

4. I switched my major probably 4 times in college.

5. I love books and have over one thousand of them in our library/workout room.

6. I have 6 tattoos. Hand, wrist, neck, back and one on each arm. The only one I regret is the one on my hand but I don't think many people even notice it. I want to get more...

7. I had my nose broken by getting whacked in the face with a rifle (not on purpose). This was in basic training.

8. I've also always wanted a pet skunk.

9. March 29th was 3 years since the first date with my husband.
